How to Find Your Personal Style: A Step-by-Step Guide to Defining Your Fashion Identity

Hello, my Sunshines!

I hope you’re all having a wonderful Sunday. Can you believe it’s already March? Winter is finally coming to an end, and that means warmer days are ahead. With spring just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to step outside and enjoy all the fun activities this season has to offer.

One of the best parts about spring is the chance to refresh your wardrobe. You can finally ditch the heavy, puffy jackets and embrace lighter, more stylish outfits. But if you’re still struggling to find a personal style that truly suits you, don’t worry—you’re in the right place! In today’s post, I’ll be sharing some helpful tips to help you discover and define your own unique style, so you can step into the new season with confidence and flair. Stay tuned!

Your personal style is a reflection of your personality, lifestyle, and values. It’s how you present yourself to the world, and it can influence how others perceive you—and, more importantly, how you feel about yourself. When you dress in a way that aligns with who you are, you exude confidence and authenticity.

1. Gather Inspiration

Before you define your personal style, you need inspiration. Start by:

Creating a Mood Board

Use Pinterest, Instagram, or a physical collage to collect images of outfits, colors, and silhouettes you’re drawn to.

Create a mood board (physical or digital) where you collect images, colors, and textures that inspire you.

Following Style Icons

Identify celebrities, influencers, or designers whose fashion choices inspire you.

Observe individuals with similar body types to understand how different styles might suit you. Check out my previous post to find out your body type.

• I personally love Kim Jennie’s (BLACKPINK) style and vibe, so I take a lot of inspiration from her.

2. Reflect on Your Current Wardrobe

Look at your existing wardrobe and ask yourself:

What do I wear the most?

• These pieces likely represent your true style.

What makes me feel confident?

• Prioritize clothes that make you feel good.

What do I rarely wear?

Eliminate items that don’t fit, feel uncomfortable, or no longer align with your style.

3. Define Your Aesthetic

Once you’ve gathered inspiration and analyzed your wardrobe, it’s time to define your style. Some common style categories include:

Minimalist

• Clean lines, neutral colors, timeless pieces

Bohemian

• Flowing fabrics, earthy tones, eclectic accessories

Classic

• Structured silhouettes, tailored fits, timeless patterns

Edgy

• Leather, bold prints, statement pieces

Casual Chic

• Effortless, comfortable, yet stylish

4. Experiment and Try New Things

Once you have a direction, start experimenting:

Visit thrift stores or fashion boutiques

• So you can try on different styles without committing to a big purchase.

Mix and match different pieces

• Look for some pieces from your wardrobe to create fresh outfits.

Step out of your comfort zone

• Sometimes, the best way to find your style is to try something unexpected.

• Don’t hesitate to try new silhouettes, colors, or accessories.

5. Build a Versatile Wardrobe

Once you’ve identified your style, focus on building a wardrobe that reflects it.

Invest in staple pieces

• A well-fitting blazer, quality denim, neutral basics, and comfortable shoes can form the foundation of your wardrobe.

Choose colors that suit you

• Find shades that complement your skin tone and enhance your features. You can check out my previous post, where I mentioned how to find your colour palette

Prioritise quality over quantity

• Instead of buying fast fashion, opt for timeless, durable pieces that you love.

6. Make It Your Own

Your personal style should be an extension of who you are. Add personal touches such as:

Signature accessories

• A favorite handbag, unique jewelry, or a standout pair of sunglasses.

A go-to hairstyle and makeup look

Something that enhances your features and aligns with your style.

A personal fashion rule

• Whether it’s always wearing bold earrings or never leaving the house without a statement piece, find what makes your look distinct.

Own It with Confidence

Stop worrying about whether others will approve. The more you own your style, the more natural and effortless it will feel.

7. Leverage Technology

Utilise AI-powered stylist apps

• Apps like Style DNA to receive personalized fashion advice based on your preferences and body type.

Finding your personal style is a journey, not a destination. It evolves with time, experiences, and self-discovery. The key is to wear what makes you feel confident and comfortable while expressing your unique personality.

So go ahead—explore, experiment, and embrace your own fashion identity!
